About Grenada

Grenada is an island in the south-east Caribbean. The country contains the main island and six smaller ones and its capital is called St George’s . It is known as the Spice Island, for its major exports of nutmeg and mace crops. Grenada covers 348 km2, with a population of around 110,000.

Grenada was a French colony from 1649–1763, and then a British colony between 1763 and 1974. Independence was finally granted in 1974. The islands are all volcanic origin and thus mountainous, and are known for the quality of soil which produces the finest quality spices. The highest peak is St Catherine at 840 m high. It has a splendid tropical climate and is heavily driven by high quality tourism. Situated at the southern side of the hurricane belt, it is less prone to hurricanes than other islands in the Caribbean.
